First Baptist Church is rooted in the evangelical tradition of the Baptist movement. A complete Statement of Faith is found in our constitution; we would be glad to provide you with a copy. Some of the significant doctrines stated there are:
- We believe in One God who created us. This "One God" exists in three persons of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- We believe in Jesus, who was born of a virgin mother, died to carry the punishment for humanity's sin, and was literally raised from the dead.
- We believe that every human has sinned, and thus need to accept God's provision for our salvation on the cross. This salvation is received by faith alone. This means that we must personally accept Jesus as our Saviour and commit ourselves to live under His Lordship.
- We believe that Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead and to establish an everlasting kingdom of righteousness.
- We believe that the Bible came to us by the inspiration of God and is the ultimate authority for the lifestyle and beliefs of the Christian.
- We believe in the Holy Spirit: who draws us to faith in Christ; and who guides, gifts and comforts the Christian.
- We believe that Christians are called to gather themselves together in local Churches for the purpose of ministry, worship and encouragement. As a Church, we practice the rites of baptism by the immersion of believers and the Lord's Supper as a way of commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus for us.
